Scritch, scratch, scritch, scratch... it may be the first thing you hear every morning or even wake you up at night - your companion's itching and scratching. The most common reason for visits to The Animal Healing Center veterinary clinic and the most-asked question from visitors to Only Natural Pet Store are about itching, licking, scratching and skin problems. In this article we will discuss some of the possible causes, and a basic protocol for addressing the most common cause - allergies.

Evaluating the history of your companion's problem is very important in helping your veterinarian determine the cause. Though allergies are the most common cause of itching and licking, there are some diseases that need to be ruled out before embarking on the path of allergy treatment.

The following are important details that will help your veterinarian diagnose the problem:

Where is the animal the itchiest? Face, base of tail, above the hips, neck, belly, feet. Watch your companion closely and determine his or her worst areas. Flea Allergies typically cause itching above the hips, the base of the tail, groin and thighs on dogs. Cats usually itch around the neck with flea allergies. Airborne and food allergies commonly cause itching around the face, ears, belly and feet. Scabies (Sarcoptic Mange/mites) typically cause lesions and itching around the ears, elbow, belly and hocks. Demodedectic Mange generally initially appears in young dogs on the face or forelegs. Cheyletiella (mites) characteristically present on the back or sides.

When did it start? How old was the animal? Mange is more common in younger animals. Puppies and kittens are also more susceptible to flea allergies as they have weaker, less developed immune systems. Older or ill animals are also more susceptible due to a weakened immune system.

Is the problem seasonal or year round? Seasonal itching is more indicative of flea or inhalant allergies or insect bite. In many cases, an animal will initially show signs of seasonal allergies that progress to year round problems.

Which came first – the itching or hairless patches/skin lesions? If the itchiness appeared before any skin lesions, then allergies or scabies are more likely to be the culprit. If the skin lesions were seen prior to the itchiness, then demodectic mange, ringworm, or bacterial infection caused by a hormonal imbalance might be the problem. (Most bacterial infections of the skin, however, are secondary to the allergy or other issue causing itchiness.)

Have you tried any medications or treatments that helped? Certain causes of itchy skin will respond to steroid treatment better than others. Flea allergies and airborne allergies seem to be more responsive than other causes.

Has it been contagious to any other animals or humans in the household? Sarcoptic mange, Cheyletiella and ringworm can be passed on to other animals or humans.

Once the cause of the itchy skin is determined, treatment can begin. Any secondary bacterial or yeast infections must be treated, however, before much progress can be seen in remediation of the underlying cause of the itchy skin. Hot spots occur from self trauma that results when the pet attempts to relieve a pain or itch by excessive scratching, biting and rubbing. These must be controlled with topical treatments while the animal’s immune system is recovering."

Humans and animals alike suffer pain after surgery and trauma. There are many unanswered questions about the way pain is processed and perceived. The first important questions is what is pain? Pain is an unpleasant sensory (or emotional) experience. Pain is difficult to evaluate clinically because it exists within the mind of the individual who is experiencing it. Because our animals cannot speak they have no way of describing their experience of pain.

There has been for a long time, debate over whether animals actually felt pain in the same way that humans do. It is generally accepted that many domestic animals experience pain similar to the way that humans experience pain because their central nervous systems are anatomically very similar and the fact that they respond negatively to painful stimuli. Many of the same neural pathways that are associated with pain processing in humans are also found in our domestic animals.

One of the biggest hurdles in trying to develop protocols for pain management is that the experience of pain can vary so widely from individual to individual. There does seem to be a correlation between the degree of invasiveness and the degree of pain. For instance, a skin incision would probably be less painful than orthopedic surgery. Response to analgesic drug administration can also vary between individuals. Management of pain requires individualized patient care and subsequent follow ups.

Pain management has become important in veterinary medicine in order to relieve suffering after surgery or trauma. Extreme pain can invoke a stress response, which can alter immune function and interfere with coagulation (blood clotting). Stress can also interfere with wound healing and negatively affect the cardiovascular system. Animals that are already compromised may be adversely affected by excessive pain."

You can't leave him home alone for two weeks! Well here's some things to think about when looking for good boarding facilities.

Most boarding facilities are inspected 3 to 4 times a year. They are checked for general cleanliness and the overall health of the animals housed at the facility. The boarding facilities are required to have a license displayed prominently which tells you when visiting a kennel that these inspections have been carried out......, make sure you look for it!

Boarding facilities may not ask you for proof of vaccination for any disease other than rabies, so it is best if you can find a facility that requires the standard vaccination protocol. For the sake of your dogs health, you should always choose a kennel that requires each dog to have a rabies, distemper (which includes a vaccine for parvo and several other diseases), and a bordetella vaccination (kennel cough). Cats should also be required to have a rabies and a feline distemper vaccination. It may also be a wise move to have your cat vaccinated against feline leukemia, especially if the boarding facility you choose handles a large number of feline boarders. Another important thing to remember is that vaccinations should be given at least two weeks in advance in order to be more effective in preventing any disease. It takes the immune system more than a few days to mount an adequate antibody response against a disease. Emergency and critical care veterinary medicine is a rapidly growing area that the University of Illinois Teaching Hospital is trying to expand. They hope to develop it into a center of excellence with the help of dedicated staff of emergency medicine clinicians.

There is a strong incentive to improve emergency medical assistance that actually extends beyond the field of veterinary medicine. There is also a nationwide push to improve emergency care for pets and it has manifested itself in some seemingly unlikely places. On board most aircrafts is you were to look around, you would more than likely see a sign with a heart and a lightning bolt on it next to the standard first aid kit. This tells you there is a defibrillator on board which is used to help people who are suffering from a heart attack.

How you may ask does all of this pertain to veterinary medicine? The fact is that the same life saving techniques that are now routinely taught to people during CPR classes were originally developed experimentally in animals for use in humans. This means that these techniques can also be used to save the lives of animals in emergency situations. For instance, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation can be modified to mouth to nose resuscitation to save a dog that has stopped breathing. The technique is slightly different, but the concept is exactly the same as it is for humans.

Hip dysplasia, most people will have heard the term heard the term, but do you know what it means?

Hip dysplasia is a progressive degenerative condition of the pelvic joint that can lead to severe lameness and pain in large breed dogs. It can be very debilitating, but with the help of several ingenious surgical techniques, the function of the leg can be restored, in some cases to almost normal capacity.

Hip dysplasia occurs when the head of the femur (the upper bone in the hind leg) does not fit into the socket, or acetabulum, of the joint properly. Patients that develop this condition are often first seen for the problem when they are fairly young.

Severe pain can be present in a young dog when the head of the femur pulls away from the joint and rides on the rim of the acetabulum during movement (called subluxation). It can put stress on the joint and tear the joint capsule. The pain often goes away on its own as the joint stabilizes, but problems with the conformation or shape of the joint can remain, causing problems later in your dogs life.

The changes seen in older animals with hip dysplasia are caused by osteoarthritis (also called degenerative joint disease) and are the result of degeneration of cartilage accompanied by bone formation and fibrosis around the joint. Both the acetabulum and the head of the femur change in shape until they no longer form a stable joint, causing lameness and pain.

If the problem is noticed early enough (when the head of the femur and the acetabulum are still mostly intact), then hip dysplasia can sometimes be corrected by a procedure called a triple pelvic osteotomy, in which the pelvis is actually cut into three pieces and repositioned so that the head of the femur fits more snuggly into the acetabulum. Most of us use our garages as storage areas, it's a great way to get those messy, smelly but useful products out of the house, but it can also mean an area of concentrated danger for your pet. By using your garage as a storage are, although it seems safe to you, could prove harmful to your pet.

One of the most common and most deadly items that is often found in our garages is antifreeze. While essential for your car, it is a deadly enemy for your pet. The substance seems to have an appeal to pets (perhaps because it is sweet) and most animals will eagerly lap it up if they are able to. If your pet were to ingest this product, it would become metabolized and then carried to the kidneys where it will form as insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, this can damage your pets kidney and cause renal (kidney) failure. Even if you don't own any pets, it may be a wise move to switch to a different type of antifreeze that is available and contains propylene glycol, which is much less toxic than ethylene glycol.

Salt that we use to melt ice out on the driveway can also pose a problem to our pets. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even skin irritation if it gets on the paws. Certain kinds of salt can also penetrate into the brain leading to a build up of fluid and potentially causing a variety of neurological problems which include seizures and death.

Garages may also be a common storage area for insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers, all of which contain different levels of toxicity. Fertilizers can cause severe vomiting and gastric irritation in our pets. Although most residential insecticides are fairly safe, there are some fly baits and systemic insecticides such as the kind used around rose bushes which can be deadly. UTI, known as Urinary Tract Infection, is a very uncomfortable problem, not only for us humans but for your pet also, especially cats. UTI can sometimes be accompanied by bladder stones, which can both initiate and promote infection in the bladder.

Whilst dogs can get urinary tract infections, cats are much more susceptible. Female cats are also more susceptible than their male counterparts. This may be because the urethra (opening from the bladder to the outside world) is very short in female cats and, it is close to the rectum, where a large amount of bacteria can be present. In addition, cats do more grooming than dogs, which can spread the bacteria.

Dogs tend to be housebroken and because they go outside, there is more opportunity for an owner to notice when there could be a problem. The pet owner may notice straining or blood in the urine sooner. Infections can often go unnoticed in cats because the pet owner may not see the cat using the litter box. Often, cat owners don't notice that there is a problem until their pet stops using their box. Whilst some cats may stop using their litter box for behavioral reasons, it is important to rule out any medical problems before assuming that the cause could be behavioral.

Since urinary tract infections can be caused by a multitude of factors, it is often difficult to discover the cause. The origin of an infection could be as simple as an overgrowth of bacteria or as complicated as bladder stones. The formation of a bladder stone is very much like the formation of a pearl inside an oyster. It often forms from a single irritating particle called a nidus, which consists of tiny particles such as small bacteria. Minerals are then deposited onto its surface, and over time it grows larger and can become very irritating to the lining of the bladder.

Cats are notorious for consuming tinsel and ribbon. Objects such as string or ribbon can cause the intestine in cats to bunch up like an accordian. Should this occur, friction can then cause the string to cut into the intestine like a saw, making many small perforations that can only be repaired by a surgeon. Other types of foreign objects, such as tinsel or small toys can also cause intestinal blockages.

Both dogs and cats have been known to chew on electrical cords, causing electrocution. Strings of Christmas lights present an additional electrical hazard. Shiny glass ornaments on Christmas trees can be irresistible to many of our cats. Unfortunately, these can be knocked off and shattered, causing danger for both pets and their owners. Some cats have even been known to climb the Christmas tree and knock it over, not only causing a mess but a potential fire hazard.

Some cats may be fond of eating your houseplants. Several holiday plants, including poinsettia, holly, and mistletoe, are poisonous. All of these plants will cause vomiting and possibly diarrhea if consumed by your cats. Likewise the product added to the Christmas tree water to make the tree last longer may cause vomiting if pets drink out of the tree stand.

Sometimes animals are seen by veterinarians with alcohol poisoning! In almost all of these cases, it is because pet owners have given their animals alcohol, probably because they think it will be funny to see their pet get drunk! Animals are much smaller than people and it does not take much alcohol to make them seriously ill.

Summer is always a fun time for dogs and their owners, but many dogs would prefer to skip the fireworks activities that usually occur around the Fourth of July. Anxiety surrounding this holiday is not uncommon in dogs and can result in a range of behaviors from simply trying to hide from the noise to destroying your property.

One simple approach to this problem is; you know that the Fourth of July is coming and if there is usually a lot of fireworks in your area, you should try and manage the problem by removing the dog from this environment. Put the dog in an inside room of the house with the television or radio on. Spend some time with your pet, your presence may be a very reassuring distraction from all the loud activity that is going on outside.

Desensitization is another method that can be used to help your pet overcome his or her fears, but this method of dealing with anxiety should be used with caution. This method of fear management involves exposing the pet to the thing that it is afraid of while producing a positive stimulus at the same time in order to teach the pet that it does not need to be afraid. If this is not done correctly, then it may not help the problem at all and may only serve to confuse the pet more. It is recommended that you attempt this only after seeking the guidance from a board certified behaviorist.

There are some pets that have such bad anxiety problems that they become destructive to themselves and to the property around them, in spite of the best efforts of their owner. For these animals, drug therapy may be the only alternative. If you have a pet whose behavior is unmanageable due to its anxiety, you should seek advice from your veterinarian before putting your pet on any medication.

PETS AND SURGERY

Neutering or spaying your cat or dog seems like such a routine event that people often forget that any type of surgery involves a certain amount of risk. The goal of the veterinarian is to reduce the risk as much as possible to ensure that the pet wakes up from surgery healthy, happy, and ready to go home. This is why a pre-anesthetic blood screening before any surgery is essential.

Pre-anesthetic blood screening before any surgery is very important. While most healthy cats and dogs are at minimal risk for complications during elective surgery such as a neuter or spay, there is always the chance that a cat or dog may have an underlying problem that might not manifest itself until the animal is put under anesthesia. During surgery is not a good time to discover that there is a problem.

Many veterinarians may recommend that a minimum blood work database be run on your cat or dog before surgery to check for any abnormalities in kidney and liver function. Many drugs used for anesthesia are metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys into the urine. If one of these organs is not working properly, the animal may not wake up for a long time after surgery because its body cannot get rid of the drug. If the kidneys are not working, then the drug may stay in the bloodstream because it is not being excreted into the urine. If the liver is not working properly, the drug may not be broken down and may continue to affect the animal long after surgery is over.

This is just one example of a complication that may arise during surgery if there were some unknown underlying problems. Therefore checking for these problems in advance can help to avoid major complications during your cat or dogs surgery.

Often, when abnormalities are found on the pre-anesthetic blood screening, the surgery is still performed as planned, but certain changes may be made to ensure the safety of the animal under anesthesia. Most often, the changes that are made to the surgery are changes in the selection of the drugs used. For example, if an animal has renal (kidney) dysfunction, a drug that is not excreted by the kidneys may be chosen.

Sick animals require a more thorough pre-anesthetic evaluation than their healthy counterparts. In the case of animals that have pre-existing conditions, more thorough diagnostic testing will be carried out to make sure that the anesthesia does not exacerbate the condition, or cause some other crisis during surgery. This way the anesthetic can be tailored to the special needs of the patient.

Should your cat or dog be having elective surgery such as a spay or neuter and your veterinarian gives you the option of doing some pre-anesthetic bloodwork, it is always advisable to go ahead and do it. The odds of something happening during surgery may be small, but if there is an underlying problem and something goes wrong during surgery the results could be catastrophic for your pet. I'm sure you'll agree, it's worth a few extra dollars to achieve a little peace of mind.

Here's an alternative to commercial flea powders: Slice about six lemons, and pour boiling water over them. Let the water stand overnight, then strain the liquid into a spray bottle. It's not known by many, but pneumonia is no caused only by bacteria an viruses, it can be caused by fungi from within the environment. Blastomyces Dermatitidis, or blasto as more commonly known is a disease causing funges that may make cause skin and respiratory infections in not only humans, but dogs and occasionally cats.

Blasto is actually a natural part of our environment, it can be found in acidic soils. The fungus exists as a mold in the environment but will become a yeast at body temperature. Animals can get infected by direct contact with the mold spores. These spores can be inhaled or can enter through broken skin when either a person or an animal rolls in the contaminated soil. Should a dog or cat be infected in this way, the disease cannot spread as the yeast form is not contagious.

If spores have entered your dog directly through the skin, cut or sore and originated in the lungs, then cutaneous infection can appear as skin lesions. These lesions will appear itchy and wet. Although these infections can stay contained, they may seriously damage any nearby muscle or bone tissue if left untreated. The worst and most common form of blasto (could also be life threatening) is pneumonia. If a respiratory infection is left untreated, severe inflammation can occur of the lungs and possibly death. If your dog coughs often, loses their appetite, becomes lethargic or has difficulty breathing, all of these could be symptoms of pneumonia.

In some cases if the dog has a weakened immunity the respiratory infection may spread to the kidneys, eyes or skin, on some occasions it has been known to spread to the spinal cord and brain. Blasto is treatable with antifungal drugs and an improvement can be seen within a few days, but t"

Among the many miracles surrounding birth is the process of the newborn's lungs filling with air for the first time. While in the womb, an animal receives all of its oxygen from the mother, so its lungs are collapsed and non-functioning. The blood circulating in the fetus bypasses the lungs via a natural pathway called the 'ductus arteriosus.' At birth, this pathway closes and blood is pumped from the right side of the heart to the lungs, to pick up oxygen, then back through the left side of the heart to carry its load of oxygen to the rest of the body.

Sometimes, things can goe wrong and the path can fail to close, meaning that the blood does not adequately flow to the lungs. This results in less oxygenated blood flowing from the left side of the heart. In a few cases, the blood may move directly from the pulmonary artery to the aorta, which is a more serious problem because now un-oxygenated blood is being sent to the tissues and can cause oxygen deficits in some parts of the body. In dogs as well in people patent ductus arteriosus is a fairly common birth defect.

Most cases of patent ductus arteriosis are currently treated surgically. Surgical repair involves approaching the heart from the side of the animal and making an incision between the ribs in order to reach the heart to repair the defect. A new, less invasive method of repairing this defect involves occlusion of the vessel with a tiny metal coil. Joint disease can be a problem faced by many dogs. Hip dysplasia is the most common that people are familiar with as a cause of rear limb lameness. Its front limb counterpart is elbow dysplasia.

Elbow dysplasia has only been recognized as a disease in dogs in the last 10 to 15 years or so, whereas hip dysplasia has been diagnosed for the last 30 to 40 years. Dysplasia means a developmental abnormality, it can be in the size, shape, or formation. Elbow dysplasia is a combination of four developmental abnormalities: an ununited anconeal process, osteochondrodystrophy (OCD) of the distal humoral condyle, a fragmented medial coronoid process, and elbow incongruity. Dogs may have just one abnormality or in some cases all four.

In English, the anconeal and coronoid processes are bony bumps on the ulna located near the elbow. The ulna is the arm bone that runs from your little finger upto the elbow. The humoral condyle is a bump found at the end of the humerus near the elbow. The humorus is the large arm bone extending from the shoulder to the elbow. Problems with the humoral condyle and coronoid process are normally due to abnormal cartilage formation. Sometimes the bones do not fit together properly resulting in elbow incongruity or an ununited anconeal process.

Classic presentations of elbow dysplasia is an active large breed dog. Rottweilers are the posterchild of this disease. Other commonly affected breeds are Bernese Mountain dogs, Laboradors, and Golden Retrievers. There is a breeder certification process available and an elbow registry. It is important for dog owners to check the breeder's certification to insure that elbow dysplasia is not present somewhere in the breeding line. Problems usually begin in dogs at around 6 months of age or older.

Ugh! California is so darn greedy. Last week, I had to pay the annual registration fees due on my 16 year old vehicle for which I forked over the princely sum of $94 to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (or as I like to call it, the California Department of Mercenary Vultures). Yes, that's right. I paid almost $100 to the crappy, #$&%@ DMV for the privilege of driving my vehicle for another year in this Godforsaken hellhole of a state. Had this been an even-numbered year, e.g., 2002, 2004, 2006, I would have also paid another $80 for a bi-annual smog test, bringing my total bill to $174 just so the Mercenery Vultures can keep tabs on my car for yet another year.

Out of curiosity, I decided to see what I'd have paid to register my vehicle in Montana. I know. I know. I shouldn't have done it. I should have known that I'd only bust a blood vessel and send myself into a combined state of stroke, respiratory distress and heart fibrulation. Nevertheless, I did it anyway.

So, anyone care to take a guess as to what I'd have to pay to register my 16 year old vehicle in Montana? I'll give you a minute to think about it ... *Jeopardy music plays in the background.* $6!!! Yes, you read that right. I would only pay $6 to register my vehicle for an entire year in Montana. Not only that, but I wouldn't have to go through the sh&@%y bi-annual Smog II test which I personally feel is nothing more than a government-mandated way of forcing California's inhabitants to purchase new vehicles every so many years. (It's a win-win for the California government. They keep tightening emissions criteria almost annually which effectively squeezes older cars off the road that were never intended to conform to such strict criteria. This, in turn, forces people to buy new cars which will generate more money in DMV fees and sales taxes. It's a brilliant scheme, really. But I'm on to them, and as soon as sexy hubby and I can jump state, we will.)

Anyway, as you can see, even from the standpoint of simply owning a vehicle, it sucks to live in California. In fact, it still puzzles me to no end why sexy hubby wanted to come to California after college anyway. Didn't he know what kind of socialist wasteland he was moving to? more...

Catholic Father Admits Hispanics Do Not Want to Assimilate

Father Esequiel Sanchez, director of the Office for Hispanic Catholics in Chicago, admits on public television station PBS what I've been saying loud and clear on this blog for at least a year -- many of today's immigrants do not come to the U.S. to become Americans and become part of the American culture. They do not wish to learn English. They do not wish to accept our culture or our language as part of their new life. Instead, they want to recreate their homeland here in the U.S.

According to Fr. Sanchez,
Hispanics don't assimilate. They just don't. They wind up -- you can't assimilate with that kind of history behind you. We're not assimilating into a 200-year-old history, we're trying to bring a 500-year history to a new context. Geographically we're closer than any immigrant group has been to their own country. And so we have access to those cultural historical places in our lives, so we can't just give that up to take something else.

Justice Is Served?

From the Free Will Blog comes some promising news from the world of destruction of personal, individual rights granted by the 5th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

An enterprising private company has decided that a particular piece of property in the Town of Weare, New Hampshire would make a wonderful location for a hotel. As you may well know, a recent decision by the Supreme Court has cleared the way for the government to seize property from private parties and give/sell it to another private party for development that will increase the local government's tax revenues. Said enterprising company seeks to take advantage of this new ruling to privately develop the land currently occupied as the private residence of one Mr. David H. Souter, better known as Chief Justice Souter of the Supreme Court.

Justice Souter's vote in the "Kelo vs. City of New London" decision allows city governments to take land from one private owner and give it to another if the government will generate greater tax revenue or other economic benefits when the land is developed by the new owner.

On Monday June 27, Logan Darrow Clements, faxed a request to Chip Meany the code enforcement officer of the Towne of Weare, New Hampshire seeking to start the application process to build a hotel on 34 Cilley Hill Road. This is the present location of Mr. Souter's home.

Clements, CEO of Freestar Media, LLC, points out that the City of Weare will certainly gain greater tax revenue and economic benefits with a hotel on 34 Cilley Hill Road than allowing Mr. Souter to own the land.-- Freestar Media, LLC press release

Justice Souter's ruling served to chip away at even more of the rights granted to private U.S. citizens in the Bill of Rights. It now seems that Justice Souter may become victim of one of his own rulings and perhaps get a taste of what it's like to be one of the "little people" who is being stripped of enumerated rights left and right these days and has no say in government with which to protect those rights from unscrupulous and misguided judges and politicians.

In all honesty, I do not know if anything will come of this matter because the Board of Selectmen in the Town of Weare may see this as nothing more than a childish prank intended to "get even" with Justice Souter for his decision. Nevertheless, it does do my heart good to see that there are still avenues to be taken when clever and resourceful American people wish to stand up to the courts and politicians that would take away those rights which make America a nation unique in all the world.

California Assembly Transportation Committee Approves Illegal Alien Drivers Licenses

Too many California politicians and legislators must be drinking the illegal alien Kool-Aid because SB-60, the bill proposed by Sen. Gil Cedillo (also known as "One-Bill Gil" because the only bill he seems to put forth is aimed at giving driving privileges to illegal aliens) made more progress in the California Legislature today by passing the Assembly Transportation Committee by a vote of 7-5.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Office of Homeland Security oppose this bill because the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has not yet issued regulations detailing federal requirements of the Real ID Act. Even so, One Bill Gil still feels some kind of pressing need to push this abomination of legislation through as quickly as possible. Anyone care to postulate a reason? Please feel free to leave your hypothesis as a comment.

From here, the bill moves to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Another Reason to Secure Our Borders

As if the already well-known negative effects of illegal immigration, e.g., draining of taxpayer resources, weren't enough to secure our borders, it seems that illegal aliens now pose a public health threat to the people of the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, cases of multi-drug resistance tuberculosis, also known as MDR-TB, are now on the rise even though tuberculosis was nearly wiped out of the American population due to improved hygiene and powerful new drugs.

Several clues point to the fact that the rise in tuberculosis cases comes as a direct result of the massive waves of illegal aliens crossing our borders each and every day.

Eighty-four percent (84%) of the 407 known cases of tuberculosis were "foreign-born" patients, primarily from Mexico and the Phillipines.
Legal immigrants to the United States are required to submit to a health exam or provide proof of good health that they are free of communicable diseases and drug addiction. So any cases of tuberculosis coming from "foreign-born" individuals must logically come from those immigrants who have not immigrated legally and proven that they are in good health.
Until recently, MDR-TB was endemic to Mexico.
In 2001, the Indiana University School of Medicine traced an outbreak of TB to illegal aliens from Mexico.
Also in 2001, the Queens (New York) Health Department traced 81% of TB cases to immigrants.

The fact that our borders are not secure has added yet another serious issue that we must all face. (1) The draining of taxpayer resources to provide medical and social services to illegals. (2) The threat of terrorists crossing our borders as illegal aliens and wrecking havoc on our country from inside. (3) Public health threats as the result of communicable diseases being brought into our country by illegal aliens that carry the diseases with them over the border.

Save Our State to Hold Rally in Baldwin Park

Thanks to Digger for posting about another rally being organized by Save Our State to protest a taxpayer-funded statue in Baldwin Park, California that supports and promotes Mexican repossession ("reconquista") of Southern California.

Comments inscribed/carved into the stone statue include the following.
This land was Mexican once, and Indian always, and is, and will be again.It was better before they came.

Digger has photos of these inscriptions as well as discussion of the antics and violent behavior (one of the monument protestors was struck by a counter-protestor's water bottle and taken to the hospital for internal bleeding of the brain) on the part of the counter-protestors who showed up to support illegal aliens and the reconquest of Southern California by Mexico.

So tell me, why must I "press 1 for English?" I called one of my credit card companies on the telephone today and was greeted by an automated answering protocol saying "Press 1 for English. Blah blah blah dos blah blah blah Espanol." (I don't speak Spanish, so I can only make out two of the Spanish words spoken by the automated system.) Wait, wait, wait. This is America. I am an American. I live in America. English is the American language of commerce. English is the American language of the law. English is the American language of success. English is the American language of doing business. So why is my credit card company, and any other company that subscribes to the "press 1 for English" mentality, so willing to ignore that fact? It makes no sense to me why we continue to pander to people who immigrate to this country and then either flat out refuse to learn English or make little to no effort to learn English. Why do we no longer expect immigrants to learn English? The first story talks about the fact that new recruits and new hires to the police department in my city are now compelled to learn Spanish because of a new, mandatory department policy. The report from ABC 7 News gives a brief description of the training program.
Officers in training at the San Jose Police Academy are learning not only how to shoot, but how to speak Spanish as part of their jobs.
They're studying the basics -- numbers, the alphabet and key phrases they'll need in the field.

The report then goes on to note that officers are being taught a number of key phrases.
"Are you injured? Do you need a doctor? Do you need to go to the hospital? What happened? Could you describe the vehicle?"

Oh, it just sounds so benign, doesn't it? As if the officers are only being required to learn a few basic Spanish words and phrases to help them in their jobs. But think about this. Let's say an officer is called to the scene of a vehicle accident, and the people involved only speak Spanish. The officer goes through the basic laundry-list of question he was taught to say in Spanish. Are we all together so far? Good. So tell me this ... how in the world is the officer going to understand a lick of what these non-English speaking people are telling him in response to his questions? If the officers are truly "studying the basics" as the author of the article states, then they are surely not going to be able to understand any "non-basic" responses given by the people being questioned.

I don't believe for one moment that the Spanish lessons are going to stop with learning basic letters, numbers and key phrases. No doubt within the next several months, or maybe within the next year or so, we'll be told that the San Jose Police Department doesn't understand enough Spanish to do their jobs, so they are going to be sent to Berlitz language courses for more advanced Spanish instruction or some other such nonsense.

This absolutely chaps my hide. We are now expecting our peace officers to deal with Spanish-speaking immigrants in the immigrants' language instead of expecting the immigrants to learn our language and become a part of this country. (Who else but immigrants would not speak English? Those born in this country learn English in taxpayer-funded public schools and would be able to converse with a police officer in English.)

Ironically, another unrelated article from CBS 5 News lends further support to the fact that Spanish-speaking immigrants need not learn English to get along in America because our business and service organizations are bending over backward to offer products and services directed to them in Spanish. The report from CBS 5 is about one of our local Humane Societies.
The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is reaching out to the Spanish speaking community by offering a six-week obedience class for Spanish speakers and their dogs this July.

Not only are the Spanish-language obedience classes low-cost, but all instruction, including the commands given to the dogs, will be in Spanish! What utter gaul these people have. It's not enough that the humans do not learn English, but now their dogs will be taught Spanish, too. So instead of learning "sit," little Fido will learn the Spanish word for "sit." And instead of "stay," Fido will learn the Spanish word for "stay." Damn, I sure as hell hope my tax dollars aren't going to support this program.

Besides, why are these people spending their time schooling their dogs? They need schooling more than their dogs do; people who do not speak English should be in English language classes, not in Spanish language canine obedience classes. It would be a better use of their time to learn English than to teach their dogs Spanish. This is not easy for me to say, either, because as you can tell from the theme of this blog, I'm a big-time dog person. What is not so evident from the blog is the fact that I am a major advocate of canine obedience, and I believe it is unresponsible of a person to have a dog that does not respond to basic commands. So for me to say that someone should do something else instead of taking their dog to obedience class is a big step for me. But that's how silly I think this Spanish language dog obedience program is.

I hate to sound morose, but I believe these news stories are just more proof that Americans are doomed to lose their country. To maintain a country, the people of that country must share a common culture, a common language, and be willing to defend and secure their borders. In this country today, we have none of that. We have allowed immigrants to come to this country and never become part of the American culture, so we therefore have lost our common culture. We all know that our politicians and the last several Presidential administrations have ignored our immigration laws and now stubbornly refuse to enforce them. Now, our language is gone.

I may be one of the last of my kind, but I will never learn to speak Spanish. And although I may become limited in the retailers I patronize, I will not knowingly do business with a company that I know panders to anyone who does not speak English. (Ahem ... that means you, Home Depot, with your Spanish-language signage all over the store, your bedroom antics with the National Council of La Raza and your support of illegal alien day workers.) I may pay more money to do business with those companies who still deal with their clientelle in English instead of Spanish or any other foreign langauge, but to me, the extra money is well worth the principle. more...

A Hollywood Actor Supports Our Troops

Let me be upfront and admit that this is VERY old news (December 2004). However, the fact that I just learned about this seems to me to exemplify the Leftist slant of our news media. We often hear of Hollywood types who openly proclaim their distaste for our country and seem to think we want to pay good money to hear their political viewpoints while in concert (remember Linda Ronstadt at the Aladdin in Las Vegas?). Not only do we often hear of celebrities speaking ill of our country, our governmental policies, etc. (which they are entitled to do by virtue of their First Amendment rights), but we are almost never told stories from the other side -- stories of Hollywood personalities who like our country, who say say complimentary things about our country, support America and support her troops. I personally never heard the following story in the news, although I am sure it was covered in at least a few places here or there, although not nearly as extensively as, oh, say, the Dixie Chicks spouting off about President Bush while they were out of the country on tour.

What follows came to me in an email this morning. As subsequent digging on my part turned up, this email does not quite have all the facts straight. I will endeavor to correct those parts of the account that cannot be factually proven. The true story (as much as I can find about it, anyway) may not be as spectacular as the email version, but I still think many of you will be touched by the generosity displayed by the celebrity in the story -- Denzel Washington. The Email Version
Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troups at Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC), in San Antonio, Texas the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question I have is why do Alec Baldwin, Madonna, Sean Penn and other Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America crap and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the base newspaper in San Antonio?

The Documented Facts

Yes, Denzel Washington did visit the Brooke Army Medical Center in December 2004 and presented Purple Heart medals to a few wounded soldiers as part of a special Purple Heart ceremony. Yes, Washington did give the Fisher House Foundation "one of the most substantial donations" (Fisher House) they have ever received.

It is not true, however, that Washington pulled out his checkbook and paid for an entire Fisher House on-the-spot.

The confusion likely came as the result of the Commander of the Brooke Army Medical Center simultaneously announcing the construction of a new Fisher House and receipt of Washington's substantial donation to the Foundation.

Wrap Up
As I said earlier, although the story is not entirely factually accurate, isn't it refreshing to hear of a Hollywood celebrity doing something nice for our troops and our country? I was touched by the story and hope you were, too.

It is terribly disheartening to know that our nation's mainstream media is apparently so slanted to the Left that they would not give a story like this as much coverage as they give to stories about celebrities "bashing" our country. more...

A Legal Guide for Bloggers

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF, for short) has published an online Legal Guide for Bloggers.

Like many bloggers, I was unaware that there were specific laws applicable to bloggers that dictate what is legal and what is not. As quoted on the EFF site, however, "None of this should stop you from blogging. Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Internet bullies shouldn't use the law to stifle legitimate free expression. That's why EFF created this guide, compiling a number of FAQs designed to help you understand your rights and, if necessary, defend your freedom."

I have not yet read the guide, so I cannot comment as to its content or readability (whether it's written in plain English or legalese). But at the very least, the mere title of the guide lends me to believe that it is a must-read for bloggers who use their blogs to write about current news-worthy stories, other people, public events, etc.
